The North Carolina Biotechnology Center is like no other organization in the world.
Created in 1984, and supported by the NC General Assembly, the Biotechnology Center's mission is to provide long-term economic and societal benefits to North Carolina by supporting biotechnology research, business and education statewide. Our programs cultivate the infrastructure, the science, the community, and the money that are essential components for biotechnology development.
Not a Member Association
We are not a member association that operates on the basis of membership dues or contributions from influential biotechnology companies. Therefore, we are unbiased in the assistance that we offer to those both inside and outside the state who seek to become part of the North Carolina biotechnology scene.
The Biotechnology Center does provide many of the same services as member association - job postings, biosciences company directory, events calendar, and a newsletter to support the biotechnology community. We maintain regional offices throughout the state to support businesses no matter where they want to locate within the state.
Not a Government Agency
The Biotechnology Center is a private, non-profit corporation that is not actually a part of state government. That gives us more flexibility in terms of becoming not only a statewide but also a national and international influence on the development of biotechnology.
We grow the North Carolina biotechnology community, not by directly performing research or investing venture capital funds, but by providing every other avenue available - free or low-cost sources of market research, research/education grants, loans, conferences, networking opportunities, and more. The Biotechnology Center works closely with the NC Department of Commerce, which provides a number of incentives for biotechnology business development.
Benevolent Benefactor of Biotechnology
Our unbiased approach allows us to help start-up and expanding biotechnology companies of any type. The Biotechnology Center does not provide wet labs and incubator space, but we provide regional listings that help you find it. Our Business and Technology Development Program makes small investments in companies, but also facilitates partnerships between scientific researchers and venture capitalists and angel investors. Rather than conduct scientific research, we fund projects and equipment at the state's universities.
By serving the community well, and without bias, the Biotechnology Center maximizes the footprint of biotechnology on the state for the economic and societal benefits of all North Carolina residents.
