The Science and Technology Development Program has three main agendas: Grants, Intellectual Exchange Groups and Regional Exchange Groups.
A fundamental goal of the Science and Technology Development Program is to strengthen the state's infrastructure for biotechnology research — an essential prerequisite for scientific advances leading to new products and applications. To meet this goal, the Program provides services and support to state universities, colleges and nonprofit institutions that contribute to biotechnology development through research, teaching and public service. Support is provided in the form of grants and opportunities for intellectual exchange.
Grants
Since 1984, the Program has provided over $50 million to enhance the research and intellectual capabilities of the state's academic and nonprofit research institutions. Below is an overview of grants currently offered by the Science and Technology Development Program. For a description of each grant, visit the grants page.
- Institutional Development Grant
- Oliver Smithies Faculty Recruitment Grant
- Biotechnology Research Grant
- Collaborative Funding Grant
- Multidisciplinary Research Grant
- Regional Development Grant
- Biotechnology Event Sponsorship
- Biotechnology Meeting Grant
Opportunities for Intellectual Exchange
The Science and Technology Development Program Intellectual Exchange Group coordinates activities of diverse interest groups to foster a dynamic research and information-sharing environment. Interest groups include:
- Bioprocessing & Process Development
- Plant Molecular Biology Consortium
- RNA Society of North Carolina
- Smaller Eukaryotes Group
- Triangle Virology Association
- Triangle Immunology Interest Group
- Atlantic Coast Chromatin Conference
Each group holds a seminar series as well as other events. For more information about the groups and their activities, please visit our Web site (www.ncbiotech.org). For a schedule of events, check the Web site calendar.
Regional Exchange Group
Regional Exchange Groups (REGs) are discussion groups sponsored by the NC
Biotechnology Center that bring people together for information exchange on topics
related to biotechnology. Regional Exchange Groups foster scientific information
exchange, industry and academic partnerships, and professional networking opportunities.
As a statewide program, the Regional Offices of the NC Biotechnology Center are directly
involved in establishing Regional Exchange Groups.
