Adipic acid (AA) is required for nylon production. Chemical synthesis of AA is expensive and environmentally unfriendly. Attempts to develop "green" production methods have been unsuccessful due to the absence in nature of a key enzyme. Duke investigators engineered this enzyme for cancer research and have requested funding to develop a fully bio-based AA production method.
