Digging Deeper: Research Tips for your Job Search

North Carolina Biotechnology Center CEO Norris Tolson welcomed the attendees and reminded us all that our state’s great scientific talent is a draw for companies considering relocating to NC. Therefore talent retention is as important as talent recruitment and talent development for industry growth.

After his remarks, Norris turned the event over to Karin Shank, Research Librarian with NCBiotech. Karin went beyond the basics of job searching to share some valuable resources and research tips for identifying jobs and potential employers, skills assessment and preparing for the interview. Karin discussed the utility and pitfalls of using jobs boards, with a focus on the NCBiotech Jobs Board. She talked about other job-seeker resources at the NCBiotech Library, including reference books, market research reports and journals. She directed participants to sites that cover company news, biotech/pharma industry news, local news and trade journals. Karin pointed us to resources for salary information that will help you answer the dreaded question: “What is your minimum salary expectation?”

Boriana Ditcheva, Web Developer at NCBiotech, gave a demo of the Center’s Jobs Board page, including a few new features. The Jobs Board now has an RSS feed! Use it to stay up to date on opportunities in NC. Job Alerts are another way to see new openings as they are posted. Once you are registered as a Job Seeker on the Jobs Board, you can post resumes, save jobs and review your previous applications.

Over 80 people attended the event, including recruiters from Aerotek, Avant, Catalent and Kelly Scientific, and hiring managers from BioAgilytix, Camargo and Novartis.
