The Confident Interview, or at least how to fake it!

Blog Homepage

So you’ve been coming to NCBiotech Jobs Network events. You’ve developed the perfect resume and a great elevator pitch. You’ve built up your professional network, and you’ve landed an interview with a great company.

Now what?

Mimi Shankin from AVANT Group addresses the crowd.

On May 20th, the NCBiotech Jobs Network welcomed Mimi Shankin of the AVANT Group to give a presentation about job interviews. Mimi had some great tips to share with our attendees. In addition to the usual advice (DON’T BE LATE), she emphasized dressing professionally, but wearing something comfortable and familiar, and paying attention to body language.

Hiring managers want to see candidates who are flexible, open-minded, and have taken the initiative to research the company before coming to the interview. Don’t try to give canned answers; interviewers prefer candidates who are honest and genuine. After all, the point of the interview is to determine the right fit for both company and candidate.

We also had a chance to practice some tricky interview questions that hiring managers are fond of asking:

  • How do you get your message heard by those who do not want to hear it?
  • How do you think management should lead an organization?
  • Should some rules be followed or enforced more strictly than others?

Often these questions don’t have a correct answer. Instead, interviewers want to see how candidates approach the question, not only in their thinking and verbalizing, but in their attitude. While we don’t recommend memorizing answers, it was very helpful to practice in a low stress environment and to hear how other Jobs Network members approached these questions.

Thanks again to Mimi for the fun and informative presentation.
